For one thing it is no longer the University of Michigan School of Art and Design. After Stamps family foundations granted the School of Art & Design’s most generous philanthropic gift ever — $32.5 million —in 2012, the Board of Regents renamed the school in Penny Stamps’ honor.
Fifteen of the full-time faculty hold dual appointments in the School and another discipline at the University.
She served as the school’s most recent commencement speaker, earning an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree at the 2018 spring ceremony.
These are heady days at the University of Michigan School of Art and Design.
It is now the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design, so renamed by Board of Regents in gratitude and recognition of the vision of Penny and E. Roe Stamps. Focusing on creative practice as an engine for cultural change and innovation.
Another 15 faculty, based in University disciplines outside of Art & Design, are jointly appointed in the School. Later, when Dean Bryan Rogers came on board, she became involved with the school strategically, as chair of the Dean’s Advisory Council, providing key support as the school sought to re-envision art/design education in the 21 st century.
