MATCH REPORT Cleary named May for the trial at Panthers Stadium alongside a mix of NRL stars and Canterbury Cup players. Thirty six tackles were proof enough that the 18-year-old kid on debut was built for the rigours of first grade.But that was four years ago. From the outside looking in, Cleary had to re-define himself and his game.Since entering the Panthers system in 2013, Cleary has always had the ability.It was a matter of putting him in the right environment to thrive.Last year Cleary finished the season with 22 try involvements, taking him on average 45.7 possessions to record one.This season, his effectiveness with the ball in hand has exploded.From just 15 games, Cleary has 34 involvements (the most in the NRL) and now he is only requiring 28 possessions.If there is one clear difference the Nathan Cleary of last season and this year’s version it’s confidence.“That’s something I’ve definitely battled with in the past,” he said.“We spoke about working on my mind and trying to gain confidence but a lot of it was around trying to be a better leader.“Leadership is definitely not easy. Penrith Panthers are the NRL's best team, but watching them remains a challenge for most fans By Jon Healy Posted 13 m minutes ago Fri Friday 21 Aug August 2020 at 2:30am Last year Cleary finished the season with 22 try involvements, taking him on average 45.7 possessions to record one. 9 who is racing away with the buy of the year honours.It isn’t just the platform that the big men are laying for Cleary though.For all the metres they run each week, both Isaah Yeo and James Fisher-Harris still find the energy to inject themselves in attack with short, crisp passing close to the line.This has only strengthened Cleary’s game as it offers him even more time and space to work with.The key to his effectiveness this year has been his ability to pick and choose moments to duck and weave through the ruck.His selective attitude keeps the defence guessing and in turns adds an extra element of unpredictability to Penrith’s attack that again frees up the pressure on Cleary as the focal point.Koroisau also dictates the tempo through the middle, allowing the Panthers to play fast and against a retreating defensive line that Cleary is taking full advantage of.Sure, his debut wasn’t all that memorable on the surface but those 36 tackles didn’t go unnoticed.They’d come up again two years later when Brad Fittler was selecting his NSW Blues side.Fittler reckoned Cleary was built for the Origin arena - he was right too.It wasn’t just his defence though, with Cleary’s ability to build pressure and turn the opposition defence around with a pinpoint kicking game also made for the tense environment that comes with representative football.And that aspect of his game is only getting better - he now leads the competition for both forced dropouts and average kicking metres.But for Cleary to really warrant his one-million dollar paycheck, he had to find more.He had to more regularly find that cut-out pass to put Charlie Staines over in the corner or that rhythm and tempo to open up opportunities on the edge.It was always there - maybe not to the extent it is now - but in glimpses Cleary looked ready to fulfil his lofty potential.Potential - it is a word that has come to define both the Panthers and Cleary for a number of years now.But finally, they are ready to take the leap towards being genuine contenders.A whole lot of it has to do with the confidence they’re playing with.And no one is more confident or sure of themselves at the moment than their star halfback.A NOTE ABOUT RELEVANT ADVERTISING: We collect information about the content (including ads) you use across this site and use it to make both advertising and content more relevant to you on our network and other sites.
