I've love this film as I love the story of Alice in Wonderland I use to have it on VHS but chewed it up and I haven't seen it for nearly 10 years but I'm glad it's out DVD and I can't wait to watch it :) The now elderly Alice, memorably played by Coral Browne, is here confronted by her childhood memories of Carroll, heightened by the confusing flitting between dreams and reality of her own aging mind. Firstly the billing of the cast is bizarre, Coral Browne is the star role and Jane Asher is in the film for around 8 minutes!! Fantasy scenes with creatures from Jim Henson's puppet works are interspersed with scenes of straight-laced Victorian society, from which any modern viewer can understand the need for escape. Quality product quickly delivered, highly recommended As she thinks back on it, she starts to see her relationship with the shy author and professor in a new way and realizes the vast change between the young Alice and the old.
A crisp image and clear sound. Ian Holm (Dodgson) and Coral Browne (Alice the elder) keep everything grounded with fine performances. The most beloved Wonderland characters (superbly realized by Jim Henson's Creature Shop) turn up in several hallucinatory scenes, only years of doubt and unexpressed fears make them grotesque and menacing.
