"The Sane Society "is a continuation and extension of the brilliant psychiatric concepts Erich Fromm first formulated in "Escape from Freedom"; it is also, in many ways, an answer to Freud's "Civilization and its Discontents," Fromm examines man's escape into overconformity and the danger of robotism in contemporary industrial society: modern humanity has, he maintains, been alienated from the world of their own creation. I suppose that's an ancient paradox about education: we can't learn something that is utterly foreign to us, yet by definition learning means incorporating something new.
the book is a must read and I really recommended it to anyone. I must have already shared many of its views, but I remember having a revelatory feeling as I read it, as if truly learning something about human nature and the world we live in. File: PDF, 3.26 MB. This book was written about 50 years ago and still up-to date, I just copied this small paragraph that give an idea about the core of Fromm message:" The western world have created a great material wealth more than any other society in the history of the human race.
Even if we should doubt whether the high frequency of suicide alone indicates a lack of mental health in a population, the fact that suicide and alcoholism figures largely coincide, seems to make it plain that we deal here with symptoms of mental unbalance. We find then that the countries in Europe which are among the most democratic, peaceful and prosperous ones, and the United States, the most prosperous country in the world, show the most severe symptoms of mental disturbance. A great read. March 26th 2013 You will find how little what you are is valued and how much the art of selling (no matter what is being sold) or narrow technical knowledge is valued. but i do wonder if the 'roads to sanity' that he suggests are actually radical enough to make such a huge change in people's lives.Loved his take on the religious, God-parent-child, take on how we interact or see or feel about God, or whatever it is you choose to call "Higher Self".How is it that we understood how to make the world better in the 1950s (Fromm, Jung, Campbell, Maslow, Rogers), but instead we continue to make it worse?Profound. In EFF, I agreed with the thesis and found his historical analysis illuminating, yet I was left with a 'so what?' This contradicts Freud's assumption of the comparative constancy of destructiveness which underlies his theory of the death instinct. interest in the questions that lie at its heart and a deep unease about the future of individual privacy. A critique of both US capitalism and Soviet communism.I like how the author explains his theories and defends them with other sources and also criticizes the sources at the same time. We live in an economic system in which a particularly good crop is often an economic disaster, and we restrict some of our agricultural productivity in order to "stabilize the market," although there are millions of people who do not have the very things we restrict, and who need them badly. If you doubt that what he says is true, try being out of a job and looking for work. Also like Marx, the solutions he presents are detached from his initial observations and more rooted in reverential belief. The most clear answer to me is to judge how well the argument is argued. So this gives rise to the question, 'how do you judge a work that feels like it has more or less been completely embedded in the collective consciousness of the modern man, and thus comes across as negligible?' One example from real life of what Fromm is saying in his book... there was a manager where I once worked whom we called "roboman" because he had no ability to relate to people but was obsessed with work, always busy on 5 projects at once and very competent technically in everything he did, though universally reviled for his disregard of people. Erich Fromm investigates the sanity of the present society.
The answer of the book is "no"A brillian and creative analysis with possible solutions. Again we may at first rebel at such humiliating statement but only until we go along with the author through all the arguments he successively presents in the book. Erich Frommfs gThe Sane Societyh is one the most illuminating and insightful books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The field of surveillance studies is growing at a rapid rate, fuelled by a growing
In the last one hundred years we, in the Western world, have created a greater material wealth than any other society in the history of the human race. Brilliant.
It's not that he is dry and boring (quite the opposite) but he supported his ideas so well that it is a bit hard to read more than a chapter or two at a time because his arguments come with some much evidence and exposition. Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 20 years ago
He's given me better arguments than I could have forged on my own against falling into spiritual despair in the face of a world that often seems... inhuman. ), it's the kind of book that can still offer a lot, and that should really find a second life among all those even remotely interested in the directions we could take in the future as human societies. The first few chapters present some enlightening observations of the ails of the human societal condition. "I am as you want me to be" is our personal creed and our work, our social life, our family life all are disconnected and increasingly unrelated to us in other than materialistic ways. – Eric Fromm, The Sane Society, p 275.
